Steptoe Butte is a quartzite island jutting out of the silty loess of the Palouse hills in Whitman County Washington in the northwest United States. The 3612feet butte is preserved as Steptoe Butte State Park Heritage Site a publicly owned 150acres recreation area located north of Colfax.

 

High above the Palouse Hills on the southeastern edge of Washington Steptoe Butte offers unparalleled views of a truly unique landscape. The warm quartzite bluff stands out against soft hills of green and mauve an occasional barn dotting the landscape.

 

This park is essentially a huge hill poking out of the palouse hills (loess) plain. The road winds around and around until you get to the top! Excellent views here but very windy. The whole area around Steptoe Butte and Walla Walla is one of the most beautiful I have seen so far.

 

A quintessential look at the Eastern Washington landscape Steptoe Butte is a particularly popular destination for its clear views of surrounding farmlands and distant mountain ranges.
